The short version
- The shop is fast, the preparation is not. Reviewing your documents takes three to ten working days. What comes before that, packaging register, EPR data and possibly a category approval, takes considerably longer.
- No base fee, but 9 percent commission. Since 8 January 2026 TikTok Shop charges 9 percent in the EU, partly 7 percent for consumer electronics, plus around 1.02 percent payment processing. New merchants pay 4 percent for up to 60 days.
- The follower threshold does not apply to you. 5,000 followers is a requirement for creators in the affiliate programme, not for merchants with their own seller account.
- Nothing happens without content. An approved shop without video is a shelf in an empty store. The selling mechanism runs through creators and campaigns, not through the product page.
- Plan for the payout delay. Payouts run weekly, but release comes 14 days after delivery. Only after 90 days does that shorten to 7 days.
What does "setting up a TikTok Shop" actually mean?
Setting up a TikTok Shop means creating a seller account in the TikTok Shop Seller Center, verifying it with company and tax data, listing products and defining a shipping method. The shop then appears as its own tab on your TikTok profile, and your products become visible to creators in the product marketplace. The technical part is done in an afternoon. What takes time is the legal and logistical preparation before it.
TikTok Shop launched in Germany on 31 March 2025, alongside France and Italy. Austria followed on 15 June 2026, together with Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland. After twelve months more than 25,000 merchants sell in Germany, with order volume recently growing by an average of around 43 percent per month.
This article walks through the setup in the order that actually makes sense: first the requirements that can block you, then registration, then the points that decide between traction and standstill after approval.
Step 1: Check whether you meet the requirements
Before you create anything, check this list. Every missing item costs you days.
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Business registered in Germany | From sole trader to limited company. Trade registration or commercial register extract, not older than three months at upload |
| VAT identification number | A plain tax number is not enough |
| German business address | A foreign-only address does not work |
| EU bank account with IBAN | For payouts |
| German phone number | For verification and support |
| ID of the legal representative | The name must match the other documents exactly |
| Packaging register entry | Mandatory once you ship to end customers |
| EPR data | Mandatory in the EU market, missing data leads to product deactivation |
The most common stumbling block is not the list itself but name consistency. The name on the ID, on the bank account and in the commercial register extract have to match. Deviations, for example through an abbreviated legal form or a name change, reliably lead to rejection.
Restricted categories: the underestimated time sink
Supplements are a restricted category on TikTok Shop. You need separate approval with additional documentation, usually certificates, test reports and packaging and product images, before you are allowed to list at all. On top of that come full food labelling obligations and strict regulation of health claims. Important: these rules apply not only to your listing but also to what a creator says in their video.
Anyone starting in this category who applies for approval only once everything else is ready easily loses two to three weeks. Run it in parallel.
Step 2: Create and verify the account
Registration runs through the TikTok Shop Seller Center. You choose Germany as your market, set the account type (business rather than individual if you have a registered trade) and upload the documents.
The review then begins. It usually takes three to ten working days. During that time you can already prepare product data, but not sell.
Common misconception: you do not need 5,000 followers for a merchant account. That threshold applies to creators who want to promote other people's products through the affiliate programme. As a merchant you sell through your own shop tab, regardless of your reach.
Step 3: List your products
Product data works differently on TikTok Shop than on Amazon. There is no catalogue structure to attach to and no keyword competition for a search results page. Data quality still matters more than most people expect, because the automated campaigns build directly on it.
What to watch:
- Complete attributes and clean variants. Gaps cost you delivery in the campaigns later.
- GTIN or EAN. Expected as standard, even where not hard enforced.
- Portrait images. The whole surface is vertical. Recycled square Amazon images look immediately out of place.
- Category-specific mandatory information. For food and supplements, ingredients, dosage and allergens belong in the listing, not just on the packaging.
Anyone coming from Amazon tends to underestimate the effort here, because the listing looks simpler. The difference is: on Amazon the listing sells, on TikTok the video sells. The listing only has to avoid preventing the purchase. We wrote up how differently the two channels work in our comparison of TikTok Shop and Amazon in DACH.
Step 4: Decide on fulfilment
For the German market you have self-shipping from your own warehouse or a 3PL, plus Fulfilled by TikTok. TikTok runs FBT in Germany through a partnership with the logistics provider Fiege, with warehouses in Germany, Spain, Italy and France and next-day delivery within Germany.
One point that often gets passed on incorrectly: on 6 August 2026 TikTok Shop published a reference guide on routing orders into Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment through nine approved middleware apps, among them ChannelEngine, CedCommerce and Pipe17. That sounds like the perfect route for any brand already on FBA, but it explicitly covers US sellers only. For Germany it is currently not a viable path.
Because impulse purchases structurally carry higher return rates than considered purchases, returns logistics belongs in your margin calculation before you start. That is not a detail but often the difference between a profitable channel and a busy one.
Step 5: Calculate the cost realistically
This is where half-knowledge tends to enter the discussion, because the headline commission sounds lower than Amazon's.
| Cost item | TikTok Shop Germany 2026 |
|---|---|
| Base or monthly fee | none |
| Sales commission | 9 percent, consumer electronics partly 7 percent |
| New merchant terms | up to 60 days at 4 percent after completed onboarding |
| Payment processing | around 1.02 percent |
| Creator and affiliate commission | set by you, typically 10 to 20 percent |
| Fulfilment | self-shipping, own 3PL or FBT |
The honest reading: the platform fee alone looks cheap. But as soon as growth runs through creators and affiliates, 10 to 20 percent commission plus sample cost plus content budget add up. A working TikTok strategy is rarely cheaper than Amazon, it just shifts cost from the platform fee to the content and creator budget.
There is also cash flow. Payouts run weekly, but release comes only 14 days after delivery. Only after 90 days as a seller does that shorten to 7 days. For brands with tight liquidity that is a planning factor.
Step 6: What actually matters after approval
The shop is live, and at first nothing happens. That is normal, not a fault.
Nobody opens TikTok to search for a product. Around 67 percent of purchases on TikTok Shop are considered impulse-driven, with the decision often made in under 60 seconds. Visibility comes from videos, not from a listing. Concretely that means:
- Set up the affiliate programme. Define a commission rate per product, enable open collaboration for breadth, send targeted invitations to fitting creators. How to steer that is in our article on the TikTok Shop affiliate programme.
- Organise content supply. One video is not enough. Without a steady supply the channel falls asleep after a few weeks, and that is by far the most common reason projects fail.
- Campaigns only after that. Paid delivery on a thin creative base burns budget without teaching you anything.
The risks that come with it
On 6 February 2026 the European Commission published preliminary findings that TikTok is in breach of its obligations under the Digital Services Act, among other things through addictive design and insufficient data access for researchers. Possible fines can reach up to 6 percent of global annual turnover. The proceeding is preliminary, not final. It is no reason to avoid the channel, but a good reason not to make it your only one.
There is also dependence on the recommendation algorithm. Reach is volatile, and a viral hit is not a business model. Anyone with a solid base on Amazon absorbs those swings far better. That is exactly why a clean Amazon multi-marketplace strategy is worth looking at before you open another channel.
Note: as of 13 August 2026. TikTok Shop changes quickly. Commission rates, FBT availability, onboarding requirements and the country rollout can change at short notice. The European Commission's DSA proceeding is preliminary and a final decision is pending. Please verify with the original sources before any investment decision.
Conclusion
Setting up a TikTok Shop is not a technical project but a preparation project. Registration takes three to ten working days, the requirements before it considerably longer, especially in restricted categories. Anyone who has the documents, the packaging register entry and the EPR data ready before registering is sales-ready in two weeks.
The real work starts afterwards. A shop without creators and without content supply stays silent, no matter how good the product is. If you want to know whether the channel pays off for your brand before you invest time, our TikTok Shop readiness check walks through it in six questions. And if you would rather not do the execution alone, our page on the TikTok Shop agency shows how we run shop, ads and affiliate together.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to set up a TikTok Shop in Germany?
You need a business registered in Germany, a VAT identification number, a German business address, an EU bank account with IBAN, a German phone number and the ID of the legal representative. The trade registration or commercial register extract must not be older than three months at upload. Without registration in the packaging register you are also not allowed to ship.
How long does TikTok Shop approval take?
After all documents are submitted in full, the review usually takes three to ten working days. A probation period follows in which shop features and daily order volume are limited. The real waiting time usually happens earlier, for example through a missing packaging register number or a restricted category that needs separate approval.
What does a TikTok Shop cost?
There is no base, listing or monthly fee. Since 8 January 2026 TikTok charges 9 percent sales commission in the EU, partly 7 percent for consumer electronics, plus around 1.02 percent payment processing. New merchants who complete onboarding pay only 4 percent for up to 60 days. The real cost sits elsewhere: creator commissions of typically 10 to 20 percent and content production.
Do I need 5,000 followers to sell on TikTok Shop?
No, that is a mix-up. The follower threshold applies to creators who want to promote other people's products through the affiliate programme. As a merchant with your own seller account you sell through the shop tab and your product pages, regardless of your follower count. Reach then comes from creators and paid campaigns.
Can I fulfil my TikTok Shop from Amazon FBA stock?
Not through an official route in Germany right now. On 6 August 2026 TikTok Shop published a reference guide routing orders into Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment through nine approved middleware apps, but it explicitly covers US sellers only. For the German market that leaves self-shipping, your own 3PL or Fulfilled by TikTok.
