Amazon Vendor and Marketplace Strategy: Model, Margin, Growth
An Amazon marketplace strategy defines the role Amazon plays for your brand, whether you sell to Amazon as a vendor or directly to consumers as a seller, and with which range, prices and goals you compete there. You make these decisions before you allocate ad budget, because they determine margin, control over prices and content, and the day-to-day workload. On this topic page you will find our articles on Vendor and Seller Central, profitability per product, the Buy Box, product launches, B2B and other marketplaces, and on choosing an agency.
Vendor and Seller Central differ in price, margin, payment terms, logistics and advertising. As a vendor, you sell to Amazon, Amazon sets the retail price, and chargebacks, shortage claims and the annual negotiations put pressure on your margin. As a seller, you keep control of price and content but take on more day-to-day work. A hybrid model of 1P and 3P is possible, but it needs clear rules on which product runs through which route. Which option pays off is shown by the contribution margin per ASIN, not by revenue.
Growth on Amazon depends on several levers at once. Without the Buy Box, shoppers rarely buy through your offer, and your Sponsored Products ads are not shown. A product launch needs stock, reviews and advertising pressure in the first weeks. Amazon Business opens the channel to business customers, with business prices, quantity discounts and invoices. Amazon Haul, Amazon's section for very low-priced products, adds price pressure on premium brands. If you plan beyond Amazon, the article on multi-marketplace strategy shows in which order OTTO, Zalando and Kaufland make sense.
If you want to hand over strategy and execution, our Amazon Marketplace Agency page describes how we combine strategy, SEO, PPC and OTTO for manufacturers and D2C brands in one team. The Amazon Full-Service Agency page shows how we take over your account, listings, advertising and FBA planning. We are an Amazon Ads Partner based in Bielefeld with over 45 million euros in managed marketplace revenue and have worked with over 15 consumer brands. If you are choosing an agency, the comparison articles contain questions for the first call that you can put to any agency, including us.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Amazon Vendor and Seller Central?
As a vendor (1P), you sell your goods to Amazon, which sets the retail price and resells them. As a seller (3P), you sell directly to consumers, keep control of price and content and pay selling fees, plus logistics fees with FBA. Vendors give up control over price and availability and face deductions such as chargebacks.
When does a hybrid model of 1P and 3P make sense?
A hybrid model makes sense when some products are profitable through Vendor while others need more price control or more reliable availability. Set clear rules: each ASIN runs through exactly one route, otherwise your own offers compete for the Buy Box. The decision is based on the contribution margin per ASIN in both models.
How do I find the right Amazon agency?
The right agency tells you up front how it measures success, who runs your account and how it charges. Ask about steering by total sales and TACoS rather than ad metrics alone, experience with vendor or seller accounts, and notice periods. The comparison articles on this page contain further questions for the first call.
